Sabbioneta
The Essential
Recommended
The "new town" of Sabbioneta was built from 1538 onwards by Vespasiano Gonzaga (1531-91), a general in the service of Philip II of Spain who took personal charge of the construction of his "ideal" city. This remarkable urban complex was built according to a star plan inside hexagonal walls with six bastions, and is considered a jewel of Italian Mannerism. The town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
