Pinacoteca Ambrosiana

Highly recommended
This palazzo houses one of the world's finest private collections. The building was finished in 1609, by order of Cardinal Federico Borromeo, who wished to set up a public library here: it has become one of the best stocked in Europe (500 000 volumes, 30 000 manuscripts, including Leonardo da Vinci's Codice Atlantico). Arranged over two floors and 26 very well-organised rooms, the museum presents magnificent works of Italian and international art from the 15C to 20C.
