The former capital of Lombard kings, not far from Milan and at the junction of the Tessin and Pô Rivers, Pavia is a busy trading town whose tall churches dominate a maze of narrow lanes lined by high red-brick edifices. It is definitely best discovered on foot. Its university is one of the oldest (11C) and most famous of Europe and continues to dispense wisdom to thousands of students. Pavia is also home to a Carthusian monastery (the Certosa) which is one of the largest Christian monuments in Italy.
