Arona owes its development to its location on the southern shore of Lake Maggiore. The town is not only a terminus for ferry services across the lake, but also a major rail centre and one of the region's busiest towns. This traditional stronghold of the famous Borromeo family has retained an attractive old district, which includes Santa Maria church, housing a lovely polyptych by Gaudenzio Ferrari.
