Piazza San Carlo

Highly recommended
Piazza San Carlo, the aptly named "lounge" of Turin, is a miracle of elegance. The harmony of this huge area, on which work began in 1619, is down to Carlo di Castellamonte. The churches, Chiesa San Carlo (19C) and Chiesa Santa Cristina (18C) stand at the south end. In the centre is the famous Caval d'Brons, an equestrian monument by Marocchetti (1838) in honour of Emmanuel Philibert. Beneath the arcades, two historical cafés (the San Carlo and Caffè Torino) compete in the elegance stakes.
