Reggia di Venaria

Highly recommended
Via Mensa (17C), designed by Castellamonte on a single symmetrical axis, leads to this imposing complex (480 000m2) used for venatio regis, the royal hunt. Construction of Piedmont's Versailles began in 1660 and took a century to complete. The most noteworthy rooms are the Sala di Diana and the richly decorated Grande Galleria. A little further on is the Mandria, a vast domain created in the 18C to house the royal stud farm. Visit the royal apartments of the palace, where Victor Emmanuel II stayed.
