Basilica di Sant'Andrea

This superb monument was built in 1220 during the city's heyday. The facade, flanked by two slender towers, is depicted by a lively play of colours between the stone and marble and decorated with three arched portals, whose tympanums are attributed to sculptor Benedetto Antelami. The broader bell tower, on the right flank, dates from the 15C. Although the inside is starker, you will notice the inlaid wooden stalls and the 14C tomb of Tommaso Gallo, the basilica's first abbot. The cloisters offer a wonderful view of the complex.
