Castle del Monte
Built by Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, this lofty, isolated castle is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in pale-coloured stone, it features an octagonal plan with an octagonal tower at each corner. A superb Gothic gateway, inspired by Ancient Roman architecture, leads into an inner courtyard, around which eight trapezoidal chambers with pointed vaulting are arranged. Above, a further eight identical rooms are lit by delicately ornamented rooms. The whole site offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
