Although Barletta is situated on the Adriatic, the sea isn't an obvious presence here as the town's main sights lie away from the seafront. The huge castle is of interest, as is the delightful Palazzo della Marra in the old town which is home to the De Nittis art museum. The palazzi which line the peaceful streets of the historic centre date from the 19C, a period of prosperity much like the glorious time of Frederick II who made Barletta an important staging point during the Crusades.
