Colossus (Colosso di Eraclio)

Interesting
This 5m-tall bronze statue - the Colossus - keeps its secrets hidden behind its opaque gaze and closed lips. Is it the Byzantine emperor Valentian I? The statue is thought to have arrived from Constantinople in the late Middle Ages, when the ship carrying it to Venice was wrecked. It probably dates from the 4C, but the statue's limbs were melted down to provide bronze for the bells of a church. It was subsequently reconstructed in the 15C, and had a crucifix added in the process.
