Piazza S. Oronzo

This vibrant square in the centre of the old town is dominated by the statue of the town's patron saint who occupies one of the two columns that mark the end of the Via Appia. It is bordered on its south side by the ruins of the old amphitheatre, a remarkable sight which bears witness to the Roman period in the Salento region. With a capacity of 25 000 spectators, this monument demonstrates the importance of the town during the time of Emperor Hadrian. Next to the amphitheatre, the surprising Palazzo di Seggio is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles.
