Arborea was built in the middle of the wetlands of Sassu, which were drained in 1928. It was named Villaggio Mussolini, then Mussolinia di Sardegna; in 1944, after the fall of Fascism, it was given the name of the former judicate. The town adopted the orthogonal lines typical of towns of this period, and eclectic buildings sprung up. Along the tree-lined avenues, the houses alternate Liberty and neo-Gothic-style buildings. Nearby Marina d'Arborea boasts a lovely beach and vast pine grove.
