Old Akragas was founded by settlers from Gela in around 580 BC. The town is renowned for its wonderful group of temples (Valle dei Templi), which date back to Antiquity. Located below its acropolis, the temples are in pretty good condition. The current town of Agrigento can be disconcerting. However, behind the array of tower blocks that are emblematic of the 1960s, you will find a historical centre dotted with real gems of Moorish-Norman art, which are gradually being restored to their rightful place.
