Caltanissetta
The Essential
Caltanissetta's golden age came in the early 20C, with the mining of sulphur, which soon became its main industry and in which it was the world's top exporter. Today, the mines have all closed but the town is still the scene of extraordinary religious feasts and processions during Holy Week. It has a maze of little streets spread out on a plateau at an altitude of 568m and it offers a vantage point over a huge swath of agricultural land.
