Canneto
The Essential
Nestling in a cove, this small town on the island of Lipari is a good base for excursions to the white beaches (spiagge bianche). The remarkable colour of their sand and sea was due to the pumice powder from the now disused Porticello quarries. Today they are known as the "ex-Spiagge Bianche" because the phenomenon ceased with the closure of the quarries.
