In summer, all of Palermo is to be found in Mondello: the city-dwellers come to swim, sunbathe, read the newspaper at a table of a café on the square and watch the light create reliefs on the imposing mass of Monte Pellegrino, which looms at the bottom of the bay. The resort was "discovered" in the early 20C by Palermo's well-to-do. Numerous villas date from this era, such as the Stabilimento Balneare, a fine spa house - together they make up a good example of Art Nouveau.
