Perched on a high triangular plateau overlooking the sea, Erice stands at an altitude of 750m on the mountain of the same name. Defended by bastions and a surrounding wall, the medieval town is a labyrinth of polished-cobblestone alleyways and narrow streets. Erice has two distinct sides: on summer days, flooded with sunlight, it offers superb views of the sea and valley; at night, when clouds envelop it and it is shrouded in the mist of its mythical origins, leading visitors to a timeless place at a remove from reality.
