Sterzing

Sterzing
The Essential
The history of Vipiteno, situated only 15km from the Austrian border, began in the Bronze Age. In Roman times, the town was called Vipitenum, then in the Middle Ages became Stercengum (from which its German name Sterzing derives). In the 15C and 16C, Vipiteno enjoyed prosperity thanks to the silver and lead mines in its neighbouring valleys. Today, it is a small mountain town with typical northern European architecture.
