The most famous square in Pisa is (despite the crowds) an architectural ensemble of exceptional unity. Four remarkable monuments make up this universally known group. Bordered by a narrow encircling wall of crenellated red brick, this vast enclosed space contains the glaring white marble mass of the baptistry, the cathedral with its famous campanile, the Leaning Tower. In the background the Camposanto (cemetery) has a long wall of white marble blind arcading.
