The Essential
Interesting
The town owes its name to the field (prato) outside the fortress where fairs and markets were held in the past. An important wool weaving centre since the 12C and now the centre of the Italian textile industry, Prato is home to a large Chinese population. Although it may not have the same charm as its neighbours, it has retained a number of medieval and Renaissance monuments in its historic centre which make it an interesting stop between Florence and Pistoia.
