Like many old Italian towns, Colle di Val d'Elsa, situated near San Gimignano, consists of a lower town (Colle Bassa), which lies in the valley beside the River Elsa, and an upper town (Colle Alta), which is perched on a fortified outcrop, surrounded by 16C walls and accessed via a monumental fortified gateway. Colle di Val d'Elsa has specialised in glass production since the Middle Ages; no less than 95% of Italian glass is made here today.
