Built on three reddish clay hills, the city's streets wend their way inside surprisingly large ramparts. It is a secretive and timeless city which enchants visitors, particularly at sunset, when the crowds have died down and Siena finally reveals its true nature. Siena is famous throughout the world for the magical Piazza del Campo, the heart of the old town and venue for the Palio horse race, which sees the city's 17 contrade (districts) compete against each other every year.
