When to go
In summer, Umbria is prized for its cool forests and ideal to get away from the stifling summer heat. Many festivals are also held in the summer in the local towns and villages. Make your pick from jazz at Perugia, ballet or classical music at Spoleto or a funfair ambience during the Palio delle Barche games at Passignano.
The region is also delightful in spring and autumn. In May, you will be able to witness the amazing Candle race at Gubbia and hikers can set off on one of the many mountain paths. In September, the vines turn shades of red and gold and the forest landscape dominates the countryside The white truffle is harvested in November.
Only winter, often wet and windy and sometimes even cold, is less appealing.
