Formerly one of the most unsanitary places imaginable, the old Pô Delta is now a nature reserve spread over Emilia-Romagna and Venetia, whose desolate landscape stretches as far as the eye can see, with the occasional isolated farmstead and clusters of poplar trees and umbrella pines. The area is criss-crossed with canals where the locals fish eels. Although a little monotonous, the region is grandiose. South of the Delta, the Valli di Comacchio form a lagoon area of melancholic beauty.
