Venice is a legendary city which has dominated the waters of its lagoon for over 2,000 years. Take a vaporetto down the Grand Canal first thing in the morning, admiring the fine palazzi which line the canal, and soak up the unforgettable atmosphere of Piazza San Marco in the early morning silence. But it's also worth heading away from the famous sights and getting lost in the maze of narrow alleyways, which lead to often surprisingly quiet parts of the city and a host of unexpected hidden treasures.
