Piazza delle Erbe
This oblong square, very lively and colourful on market days, is lined by historic palazzi and houses, some of which still boast their original marble columns and frescoes. In line down the middle of the square stand the market column; the 16C capitello or tribuna (a rostrum from where decrees and sentences were proclaimed); the fountain known as the Madonna Verona, a monument much loved by the inhabitants of the city; and a Venetian column surmounted by the winged Lion of St Mark (1523).
