Biržai, the northernmost town of the Aukštaitija region, lies at the shores of the man-made Lake Sirvėna, which is surrounded by birch and reeds that sway in the wind. A statue of the poet Julius Janonis (1896-1917) watches over the central square. Not far from the white St John the Baptist Church, a bridge spans the moat that protects the castle (16C), which houses the Regional Museum. After visiting that, you might want some refreshment: Biržai is the capital of beer.
