Dokkum

Dokkum
The Essential
A small tranquil town built on top of a knoll, Dokkum is known to ice-skaters taking part in the Elfstedentocht (a 200km-long event) thanks to its "turning point" in the race. It is also a place of pilgrimage for Christians commemorating the death of St Boniface in 754. A merchant port that was the headquarters of the Admiralty in 1597, the town prospered until the 17C: its ramparts and the layout of the old town have not changed since 1649; as a result, it has retained all its former charm.
