The Essential
Interesting
The capital of Friesland and the historic flagbearer for this unique province, Leeuwarden is often shunned by tourists who prefer to head directly north to the Wadden islands. However, this young and vibrant town has so much to offer. Enlivened by its status as the 2018 European Capital of Culture, it is well worth a visit for its old town, leaning tower, lively narrow streets at night, its museums and its wealth of heritage which it has inherited from Friesland's "stathouders". A good introduction to a visit of the region.
