Located along the Ijsselmeer, this small town is one of the more charming of Friesland's "eleven cities". A member of the Hanseatic League, it was once very prosperous as a result of its trade with the Baltic. Since this period, its arts and crafts have made its name. Away from its main roads, visitors can explore Hindeloopen's tranquil footpaths which wind their way between houses and gardens, as well as the footbridges that span its narrow canals. In summer, the town is enlivened by the presence of many pleasure boat enthusiasts.
