Venlo
The Essential
A small industrial town on the banks of the Meuse, Venlo stands at the heart of an important agricultural region (asparagus, mushrooms, flowers, tomatoes, gherkins etc). This former Hanseatic town is also renowned for its particularly lively carnival. A legend dating back to the year 90 AD attributes the founding of Venlo to Valuas, chief of the Germanic Bructeri tribe. The memory of its founder is rekindled during festivals here, when two giant effigies, representing Valuas and his wife, are paraded through the town.
