The Essential
Cradle of the Philips company, Eindhoven is used to being in the shadow of its famous employer. Bombed numerous times during the Second World War, the city has been left with very few historical vestiges. The Netherlands' fifth-largest town has nonetheless made the most of its history and heritage by focusing on industrial tourism and at the same time becoming one of the centres of Dutch design. And thanks to its airport being on budget airline routes, it is emerging as a destination.
