Heusden
The Essential
Situated in a bucolic setting beside the Meuse, this well-restored town was one of many strongholds built in the Brabant during the wars between the Northern Netherlands (the United Provinces of William of Orange) and the Southern Netherlands (controlled by the Spanish) in the 16C. A walk along the old ramparts will allow visitors to understand how a fortified town operated, with its defence system, gullys and moats.
