These two municipalities (15km south-east of Alkmaar) merged in 1970. Graft has preserved an attractive town hall with stepped gables dating from 1613. However, it is Rijp, an important herring fishing and whaling centre in the 17C, which is the more interesting, with its town hall built by Jan Adriaensz Leeghwater in 1630, its wooden gabled houses, and its Protestant church, the Grote Kerk, embellished with 23 stained-glass windows from the 17C.
