Once a Hanseatic League town on the right bank of the IJssel, Deventer, situated in the southernmost part of the province of Overijssel and the Salland region, has kept its very old character, evidence of its rich history. In the late 16C the town was the birthplace of the painter Hendrick Ter Brugghen, who was much influenced by Caravaggio, and in the late 17C, the artist Gerard Ter Borch, who was born in Zwolle, came here to work. Today, Deventer has a pleasant lively atmosphere thanks to its students and busy shopping streets.
