Wijk bij Duurstede
The Essential
This town located near the River Lek is the former Dorestad, a large centre for trade abandoned after its destruction by the Normans in 863. The town's fortunes were revived in the 15C under the impetus of the Bishop of Utrecht who chose it as his residence. In addition to its museum and castle, other sites of interest include a windmill (Molen Rijn en Lek), near the Lek and, on the main square (Markt), the Grote Kerk, a church with an incomplete square tower, and the town hall (1662).
