With its cobbled streets and picturesque monuments, the charming little town of Veere has lost none of its character. A former fishermen's colony, it grew wealthy thanks to the wool trade with Scotland, which was halted in 1795 by the War of Independence. After construction of the barrage (1961) stopped fishing boats accessing the North Sea, Veere was transformed into a centre for nautical tourism. Stroll along the port and the little streets, where remnants of old fortifications can be seen (such as Campveer Tower).
