Hidden behind its ramparts on the right bank of the River Vistula, Torun gives an impression of serenity yet, thanks to its student population, it is a lively place. Once an important Hanseatic port, its warehouses full of merchandise, it is proud to have been the birthplace of Copernicus. Hotels, restaurants, cafés and theatres all contribute to its appeal, not to mention the rich architectural heritage evident around Staromiejski Square, which earned it Unesco World Heritage site status in 1997.
