Hidden behind its ramparts on the right bank of the River Vistula, Toruń gives an impression of serenity yet, thanks to its student population, it is a lively town. Once a major Hanseatic port, it is proud to have been the birthplace of Copernicus. Hotels, restaurants, cafes and theatres all contribute to its appeal, not to mention its rich architectural heritage, evident around Staromiejski Square, which earned it UNESCO World Heritage site status in 1997.
