Lódz (pronounced "woutch") is Poland's third city. Born in the 19C out of the Industrial Revolution, it inspired The Promised Land, by Władysław Reymont, Nobel Prize in Literature. The brick chimneys no longer billow out smoke in the background, and the city, in the throes of a revival, today plays a major role in Poland's cultural life with its famous Cinema School, mansions and industrial heritage converted into museums.
