With its canals straddled by little bridges and its moliceiros, graceful and colourful boats reminiscent of Venice's gondolas, Aveiro makes the most of its waterside setting. Its centre, which boasts several fine Art Nouveau buildings, is home to a leading Museum of Baroque and Sacred Art. The surrounding area is also attractive. North of the town, beyond the salt marshes, a vast ria offers a stunning landscape of marshland and canals, with a long band of dunes and pine forests, part of which is a nature reserve, protecting it from the assaults of the Atlantic.
