Barcelos is a cheerful little town in northern Portugal with a pleasant old town lying around a medieval bridge. It is a renowned ceramics manufacturing centre, with the omnipresent decorative cockerel, which has become something of a tourist icon. Don't miss the Thursday morning market on the Campo da República either. Selling local produce and crafts, it is one of the largest markets in Portugal.
