Located in the austere province of Trás-os-Montes, the solitary citadel of Bragança, Portugal's most remote town, stands at an altitude of 668m. Above the new town stands the medieval city, in the shelter of its ramparts. Bragança is well worth a visit and is also an excellent base from which to explore the Parque Natural de Montesinho and Mirandela, a former Roman town in a beautiful unspoilt setting.
