Situated 1 000m above sea level, Guarda is the highest town in Portugal. Its name "guardian" refers to its role as the main stronghold in Beira Alta province, near Spain. Surrounded by medieval citadels and fortresses spread along the border, the town is windswept and has an austere atmosphere, but is still a good base for exploring the region.
