Palácio da Ajuda

Interesting
Residence of the monarchs Louis and Maria Pia from 1862 onwards, this palace (18C-19C) contains a profusion of furniture, tapestries, statues, paintings and decorative objects from the 19C. Note the ceiling in the winter garden, with its covering of agate. The vast, solemn rooms on the first floor contrast with the more intimate rooms, such as the queen's chamber, where the many personal objects give a more lived-in feel.
