The Essential
Highly recommended
Located on the Tagus estuary, Lisbon is both a coastal and a river city. A cultural crossroads, commercial hub and the prestigious capital of a modest country, today it is the symbol of the nation's dynamism and, after several decades of major works, a modern and creative hub. It is also of course the home of fado, and an old working city, disorderly and a little gritty, proffering an invitation, which can't be refused, to stroll about its maze of winding streets and irregular stairways.
