Vila Franca de Xira
The Essential
This industrial west-bank city at the beginning of the Tagus estuary is, along with Santarém, Portugal's main bullfighting and equestrian heartland. The town comes to life in July, in particular, with the Festa do Colete Encarnado (named after the red waistcoats of the campinos): there are processions of caminos and bull runs, where the bulls are let loose in the streets. The bullrings, built in 1901, are located at the south end of the town and house the Ethnography Museum.
