Caniçal
The Essential
After losing its key role, following the 1981 whaling ban, this village stagnated for some years before becoming one of Portugal's premier tuna fishing ports. Near the old port, at the bottom of the village, a small whaling museum recalls this former industry from 1940 to 1981. You will see harpoons, model boats and scrimshaw (teeth from sperm whales). You can also climb on board a bathyscaphe and experience a 1,000m-dive to the depths of the ocean bed.
