The Essential
From 1350 Crato was the seat of a priory of the Order of St John. The most famous prior was António Do Crato, grandson of King Manuel and illegitimate son of Luís. In 1356, the residence of the knights was transferred to the fortified monastery at Flor da Rosa, but Crato kept its role as a priory. The Varanda do Grão Prior (16C), Renaissance-style porch on Praça do Município, is the only vestige of the palace of the grand prior.
