Today, Fátima is a disparate place with a mix of holy places, souvenir shops, convents and residential hotels. It was in this verdant, hilly and once isolated spot, at Cova da Iria (346m above sea level), that the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three children several times, on the 13th day of each month, from May to October in 1917. It has become the largest Catholic shrine in the country and one of the most important in the world.
