On a hill on the right bank of the Tagus, Santarém dominates the vast plain of Ribatejo, of which it is the administrative centre. A reputed bullfighting and equestrian centre, the capital of Portuguese bullfighting, along with Vila Franca de Xira, the town comes into its own during the big feiras and touradas. Hidden away in its lively little streets are numerous churches with unexpectedly rich interiors.
